MOBILE APOCALYPSE: GOOGLE IS CHANGING!

Some are calling it the mobilegeddon others are calling it mobile apocalypse, but what does Google’s Algorithm update really mean? And more importantly…are you prepared?

Google’s upcoming mobile-friendly update, which will take place on April 21st, can be quite confusing to many, which is why we have created this blog to give a clearer insight on the update, its effects and what you can do to prevent your company’s website becoming dead and buried in mobile search engines.

SIMPLY PUT…

Basically, Google’s update intends to reward mobile-friendly websites with better mobile search engine rankings, beginning April 21st. On the flip side, if your website is not mobile-friendly, it could experience a negative impact in mobile rankings. They will receive a smaller piece of that mobile search traffic pie and have to rely on desktop-based organic traffic.

So why would Google give us a date? And why would they warn us of an algorithm update? They never usually do. Google notoriously surprises us with these things, and rarely tells us the exact date such a change will happen. Well, the reason Google have provided a date is to encourage anyone who doesn’t already have a mobile-friendly website, to get one going!

IS IT REALLY AS IMPORTANT AS THEY MAKE OUT?

In short, in 2015 it’s now critical to have a mobile friendly website as so many people are using their smartphones to access the World Wide Web – from being in a waiting room or on the train, to checking out your website on their lunch breaks.

In fact, 60% of Internet usage is now made through smartphones rather than desktops…meaning 6 out of 10 of your website’s visitors are accessing on a smartphone.

TAKE THE TEST!

If your site is already mobile-friendly, you won’t have much to worry about and from the people we’ve spoken to so far a good majority are actually OK:

If you get a green ‘great! This page is mobile-friendly’ then perfect, your site is mobile friendly! If you get a red “Not mobile-friendly,” then obviously there is some work to be done. You may have an old website.

If another person manages your site and you’re getting a red notification from Google, it’s time to give them a call.

GOING A STEP FURTHER

If your website isn’t mobile friendly, it will significantly effect your visitor’s website experience in a negative way. Plus, as mentioned above, the Google update will alter search engine rankings. Therefore, if your site isn’t mobile friendly, they may not even find you in the first place!
